From August 19 to 20, 2022, the summer strategicseminar of the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) was held in Room 210, Ruide Building, new Changping Campus, Peking University. Zhang Jin, the Vice President of Peking University, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School, and Academician of the CAS Member, Li Hang, the Director of the Office of the new Changping Campus Management Committee, and all faculty of SMSE attended the seminar. Zou Ruqiang, the Secretary of the CPCCommittee ofSchool of Materials Science and Engineering, presided over the seminar.

Dean Zhang Jin made a report on discipline construction and talent team construction. Taking the construction of “New Engineering Disciplines” as the background, he introduced the work of SMSE in talent team construction and discipline development in the past year and analyzed the existing problems. He proposed that SMSE will adhere to the pursuit of “making materials that bring real benefits to human development”, deepen the ideological and action awareness of taking high-level research universities as a national strategic scientific and technological force, solidly promote the construction of world-class disciplines, build a material subject education and research institution with international influence, carry out organized scientific researches and overcome critical problems. He particularly emphasized that efforts should be made to establish and improve the system and mechanism of the construction of “New Engineering Disciplines”, straighten out the academic innovation chain and strengthen its connection with the industrial chain. At the same time, it is also important to set good examples in addressing major national needs and making great breakthroughs in critical technologies to make more significant contributions to China.

Li Hang, the Director of the Office of the new Changping Campus Management Committee, was invited to make a report on the construction and development of the new campus. He gave an overall introduction to the strategic consideration, current situation, and future planning of the construction of the new campus, and explained its infrastructure construction, the planning of surrounding space expansion and supporting construction, and the planning of constructing an industrial, teaching and research integration and innovation center plot in detail. He said that they would strive to create a good teaching, research living, and learning environment for teachers and students, and build a new campus of Peking University with Yanyuan flavor and new engineering culture.

On the 20th, Pan Feng, the Deputy Dean of SMSE and the Deputy Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School, made a report on the work of the Shenzhen Branch of SMSE, School of Advanced Materials (SAM). He introduced the construction of SAM from the aspects of the construction of a talent team, student training, characteristics of disciplines, and development direction, and emphasized that the next step would be to promote an organized scientific research innovation system. He said that teachers and students in Shenzhen are looking forward to working together with teachers and students in Peking to explore and jointly build the SMSE of PKU in the future.

Zhang Jing, the Deputy Secretary of the CPC School of Council Materials Science and Engineering Committee, mainly introduced the recent ideological and political works. She emphasized the need to keep a scientific attitude and the spirit of craftsmanship, dig deep into the connotation of the discipline, focus on unique activities, and construct the “new youth of SMSE” ideological and political project in a better way. Guo Shaojun, the Deputy Secretary of the CPC School of Council Materials Science and Engineering Committee, introduced the relevant measures taken by SMSE to strengthen the construction of teaching ethics. He emphasized the extreme importance of laboratory safety in SMSE, interpreted the preferential policies for SMSE’s postdoctoral students, welcomed everyone to participate in the work of the Trade Unions actively, and asked everyone to comply with the relevant requirements of epidemic prevention works. Zhou Huanping, the Deputy Dean of SMSE, said that the college would further strengthen the organization of scientific research and the national strategic, scientific and technological strength, give full play to the advantages of basic research and interdisciplinary, work together for development, pool multiple resources and strengths and enhance SMSE’s influence. Lei Ting, the Assistant Dean of SMSE, introduced the critical work and challenges of SMSE’s undergraduate and postgraduate training in the near future, emphasizing the overall goal of “concept first, system guaranteed, and full implementation”.

Later, the teachers who participated in the seminar discussed the critical works of SMSE in the future. They exchanged ideas and made many valuable suggestions.

At the end of the meeting, Dean Zhang Jin made a concluding speech. He thanked the teachers for their concern, support, advice, and suggestions on the work of SMSE. In addition, he concluded that after the discussion, everyone had reached a preliminary consensus on the discipline construction, undergraduate training system, post-doctoral team development, scientific research platform construction, etc. of SMSE. He stressed that in the next step, all the functional departments should set the consensus as the goal of development, refine it into a work plan, put the idea into practice, and make new breakthroughs in the future. He hoped that the development of the SMSE would make an important contribution to the construction of the “New Engineering Disciplines” of PKU, and promote the construction of the “Double First-Class” discipline to a new level.
